GCG – Day 5: Leon – El Bierzo

WALK: FUENTES NUEVAS – CACABELOS. 8 KM – 2.5 HOURS
CULTURAL EXPERIENCE: VISIT LEON CITY CENTRE AND CATHEDRAL
DINNER: EL BIERZO
ACCOMMODATION: EL BIERZO
Today we’ll do something different. We’ll start our day visiting the city of Leon and its astonishing cathedral. The Cathedral was built between mid-XIII and XV centuries. It is known as “The House of the Light” due to its 125 (1,800 sq. m) stained glass windows. The large rose window is particularly outstanding.
We’ll visit Casa de los Botines, a fascinating palace created by Antoni Gaudí, the famous Catalan architect and other monuments in the old city. We’ll walk through the narrow streets of the 2 main districts: Barrio Húmedo (Wet District) and Barrio Romántico (Romantic District) located on both sides of the cathedral.
After this extremely interesting cultural activity, you’ll be transferred to Fuentes Nuevas in El Bierzo region, a wide valley surrounded by mountains with a more benign climate than in la Meseta (the Spanish central plateau we’ve been the last 2 days).
You’ll walk from Columbrianos to Cacabelos, the heart of the well reputed El Bierzo wine.
When finishing our walk you’ll be driven to your accommodation where you can rest and refresh. Then, later on, we’ll have our gastronomical dinner.
